Go Behind the Scenes - Cultural Gastronomy in Malaysia
The Go Behind the Scenes - Cultural Gastronomy in Malaysia program is designed to explore how to best package and promote Malaysia's unique and diverse gastronomy to international tourists.
Study modules include preparing and serving traditional Malaysian cuisine, in Taylor’s suite of practical facilities to gain insights into the country’s diverse culinary arts and hospitality practices.
After visiting international hotels in Kuala Lumpur you will be mentored on intensive placements by senior executives at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, a property managed by AEG Ogden, whose Chairman, Mr Harvey Lister, is a UQ Adjunct Professor. Finally, you will undertake a gastronomy tour through Selangor visiting plantations, producers, markets and food service enterprises.
Throughout, you will be collecting data via assessment, which will form part of a collaborative research project between the program leader, Dr Richard Robinson, from the UQ Business School’s Tourism cluster, and research colleagues at Taylor’s University, on how to best package and promote Malaysia’s unique and diverse gastronomy to international tourists.
Eligibility and applications
All applicants must meet the standard UQ Abroad Student Eligibility Criteria and the following additional program criteria:
- have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.5 as shown on their UQ studies report;
- be currently enrolled and taking classes in a degree program at UQ (preference will be given to BIHTM and BBusMan/BIHTM Hospitality major students)
- submit the Personal Statement Form to their UQ Abroad Application
- a cap of 20 students has been applied by Taylors University, in order to deliver this experience and resource-rich program. As such selection interviews may be required if applications exceed places available
2 UQ Units. Successful applicants will be enrolled in TOUR3003. Maximum of 2 UQ Units if the course is successfully completed (pending UQ faculty approval).
Students studying a BIHTM or BBusMan/BITHM may be eligible for credit towards #2 Advanced General Elective as approved by BEL Faculty. Students will not be able to gain credit if they are studying a BIHTM dual major.
Costs and funding
Tuition will be paid to UQ. The program delivery cost schedule is approximately $2,500 AUD (excluding tuition fees). This cost schedule includes the airfare (students can make their own arrangements), and Taylors University program delivery costs: airport transfers, accommodation for 12-14 days (inclusive of some meals), welcome ceremony, two days in downtown Kuala Lumpur, and a 3-day Gastronomy Discovery Tour though Selangor.
Additionally, students may need up to $500 for other expenses (additional meals, incidentals, communication, souvenirs etc).
Eight New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants of $2,500 each, are available to eligible students to support their participation in this program.
Accommodation is included in the program delivery cost schedule.
