Hosted by the UQ Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, the fifth annual UQ Rugby Benefit Dinner was held on Thursday 1 November in New York City.
More than 150 UQ alumni and guests gathered at the Manhattan Club for an evening of networking and rugby festivities. The stellar 2018 panel included the legendary Ella brothers Mark, Glen and Gary, Aon Uni Sevens star Mackenzie Sadler, and Dr Mark Loane AM as the panel MC.
The Mark Loane Medal, which recognises and rewards the outstanding potential of America's best high school rugby player, was awarded to Cardiff Metropolitan University student Ethan McVeigh. Funds raised from the dinner will support Ethan’s trip to UQ during his summer vacation to play for the renowned UQ Rugby Club and participate in the UQ Rugby Academy.
The fourth annual UQ Rugby Benefit Dinner was held on Thursday 2 November in New York City, hosted by the UQ Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.
This sold out event was attended by more than 200 return guests and new friends, who converged at the Manhattan Club to celebrate another fantastic evening of rugby festivities with rugby legends Nick Farr-Jones AM, Mark McBain, Dr Brendan Nasser, Joe Roff, Nick Stiles, and Tim Horan AM as MC.
The Mark Loane Medal, which recognises and rewards the outstanding potential of America's best high school rugby player, was awarded to California Polytechnic State University student Patrick Madden. Funds raised from the dinner will support Patrick's trip to UQ during his summer vacation to play for the renowned UQ Rugby Club and participate in the UQ Rugby Academy.
More than AU$64,000 was raised through ticket sales, raffle tickets and a live auction on the night. Funds raised will go to the UQ Rugby Club and Play Rugby USA.
On Thursday 3 November, the third annual UQ Rugby Benefit Dinner was held in New York City, hosted by the UQ Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. Return guests and new friends from across the globe converged at the Manhattan Club for another fantastic evening of rugby festivities.
The 2016 panel included rugby legends Dr Steve Cutler, Con Foley, Michael Lynagh AM, Andy McIntyre, James Horwill, Dr Mark Loane AM, the late Dan Vickerman, and Nathan Sharpe as MC.
UQ alumni Dr Mark Loane AM, Michael Lynagh AM and Andy McIntyre shared stories of their time at UQ as junior rugby players – noting that the UQ Rugby Club helped shape their professional careers.

The second annual UQ Rugby Benefit Dinner in New York was held on Thursday 5 November at the Manhattan Club. Nearly 200 UQ alumni, rugby fans and friends attended the dinner, hosted by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.
The stellar speaker line-up, moderated by Tim Usasz, included Mark Loane, Michael Lynagh, Mike Harris, Mike Tolkin and Mike Petri, with discussion dominated by an analysis of the recent Rugby World Cup.
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the inaugural Mark Loane Medal. The Medal recognises and rewards the outstanding potential of America's best high school rugby player, and is based on the player's skills, ability and aptitude, both on and off the rugby field.
University of Arizona freshman Steven Branham was awarded the medal in recognition of his exceptional high school rugby achievements which include being a four-time All-American playing with the U17 All-Americans squad in 2013, and the USA Rugby Boys U19 High School All-American squad in 2014 for the Rugby Four Nations Cup. The award includes a rugby scholarship which allowed Steven to travel to UQ during his summer vacation to play for UQ Rugby and attend the UQ Rugby Academy.

The inaugural UQ Rugby Benefit Dinner in New York was held on Thursday November 6 at the Manhattan Club. More than 200 UQ alumni, rugby fans and friends enjoyed an evening of networking and festivities, hosted by Professor Iain Watson, former Executive Dean of the BEL Faculty and now Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement), The University of Queensland.
Themed “Captains Courageous for the Ages”, the 2014 panel included former and current Australian rugby legends John Eales AM, Dr Mark Loane AM, Michael Lynagh AM, Stephen Moore, Nathan Sharpe and Tim Usasz as MC.
More than AU$52,000 was raised through ticket sales, raffle tickets and a live auction on the night. Funds raised will go to the UQ Rugby Club and Play Rugby USA, a non-profit organisation designed to teach positive life skills to young people through rugby.
