IAME Conference Awards Best Ports paper to the Sustainable Infrastructure Research Hub
The prestigious IAME 2024 Conference, held between June 26th to 28th in Valencia, Spain, recently provided a platform for critical discussions on "Building innovative maritime ecosystems: Smart, Green & Valuable for society." This annual event, organized by the International Association of Maritime Economists, brings together researchers and industry leaders to explore the future of the maritime economy in a dynamic environment marked by ongoing challenges. The conference proved to be a successful venue for groundbreaking research. Researchers from UQ’s Sustainable Infrastructure Research Hub (SIRH) were delighted to have their paper, "Transparency and the role of reporting in energy consumption and GHG emissions in container terminals," receive recognition from the Scientific Committee, winning the Best Paper in the Ports category. This recognition highlights the paper's significant contribution to the field of ports decarbonization.
The article, led by UQ researcher Gustavo Martinez Tello, is part of a collaboration between the SIRH at UQ (Dr. Cristyn Meath), Kühne Logistics University in Germany and Universidad de los Andes in Colombia (Professor Gordon Wilmsmeier). The paper examines the critical role of transparency in disclosing emissions and energy consumption data at container terminals. This data is essential for designing effective public policies to mitigate climate change and set appropriate targets for emission reduction commitments. The study analyses current transparency levels and data verifiability between container terminal headquarters and individual terminals across the industry.
