Cost of Lung Cancer Screening in Australia

15 November 2019

Together with a team of international experts in thoracic medicine at the Prince Charles Hospital, CBEH's Professor Luke Connelly has published new evidence on the cost of lung cancer screening in Australia.

The study, published in the Internal Medicine Journal, recruited more than 700 volunteers who were (or had been) long-term smokers who agreed to undergo screening for lung cancer. The authors estimated the costs of lung cancer screening in Australia to be similar to that reported in the international literature. As advanced cancers are generally more expensive to treat than cancers detected early and have worse survival outcomes, the authors argue that screening may be a viable way to reduce the costs of lung cancer and improve health outcomes via early detection.
