Nine people connected with The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL) have received Australia Day 2020 Honours.
The annual awards celebrate Australian citizens who have achieved excellence in their field and made positive contributions to the nation through noteworthy acts of service.
BEL Faculty Deputy Executive Dean Professor Phil Bodman applauded the 2020 honourees – among them Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland The Honourable Chief Justice Catherine Holmes AC, and School of Law Professor Anthony Cassimatis AM.
“These outstanding BEL alumni and staff have made a significant difference across a broad range of fields, including education, the judiciary, local government, business and the law,” Professor Bodman said.
“On behalf of the Faculty Executive, I would like to thank them all for being wonderful representatives of the University and Australia.”
Head of the School of Law Professor Patrick Parkinson said he was delighted to see seven UQ law community members on the list, including Professor Cassimatis AM.
“Anthony is a legend at UQ for the quality of his teaching in international law to generations of students, and for his huge contribution to international law mooting,” Professor Parkinson said.
“He has demonstrated exemplary dedication to the work of legal education over a long period of time.
“Congratulations to Anthony and all of our honourees on their well-deserved accolades.”
Other UQ recipients included philanthropist and clinical haematologist Dr Paul Eliadis AM and Triple P founder Professor Matt Sanders AO.
