BEL Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research strategy

At the end of 2023, the BEL Faculty convened a working party for the development of a BEL Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Strategy for all schools and centres to address the strategic imperatives of the UQ strategy at a local level, focusing on research excellence and impact, people and opportunities and the enabling environment. The working party was co-chaired by Professor Brendan Hokowhitu (Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Futures) and Gregory Egert (Elder-in-Residence ARC Centre of Excellence Indigenous Futures), and included members, Dr Samantha Cooms (Business), Associate Professor Julie Moschion (Economics), Dr Dani Linder (Law), Dr Jean Spinks (Centre for the Business and Economics of Health) and Dr Meredith Downes (BEL Faculty, secretary).

The working party’s final report was delivered in May 2024 and included recommendations across partnering with communities, Indigenous leadership, recruitment and support for Indigenous staff and HDR students, and ethics approval processes. The Faculty is now in the process of implementing these recommendations.

Research engagement and industry funding

In 2023, a cross-faculty working party developed the BEL Plan for Increasing Research Engagement and Funding from Industry. Membership of the working party included Professor Martie-Louise Verreynne (Associate Dean, Research, BEL Faculty, Chair), Associate Professor Christoph Breidbach (Business), Professor Nicole Hartley (Business), Professor Tim Kastelle (Business), Professor Rumi Masih (Business), Professor Brenda Gannon (Economics), Professor John Swinson (Law), Dr Tina Rampino (Australian Institute for Business and Economics), Dr Sue McAvoy (Centre for the Business and Economics of Health), Amanda Smith (BEL Faculty) and Suzanne Brangwin (BEL Faculty, Deputy Chair and Secretariat).

The working party produced a plan for increasing research engagement and industry funding, which outlines a series of actions linked to BEL’s three primary engagement and funding models: (1) responding, (2) engaging, and (3) building programs. In 2024, a follow-on External Engagement working party has been established to progress the implementation of these actions.
