The BEL Faculty’s Associate Dean (Academic) has a broad-ranging role which includes:

  • developing and administering policy concerning academic programs in the Faculty,
  • managing the Faculty’s Teaching and Learning program,
  • student management, and
  • representing the Faculty on a range of University Committees.

This includes the development of the teaching and learning component of the Faculty Strategic Plan and the development and implementation of the Faculty Teaching and Learning Enhancement Plan as well as overseeing the development of the BEL program within the UQ College.

The Associate Dean (Academic) chairs the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee and maintains regular and ongoing communication and consultation with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and Faculty Heads of Schools in relation to all teaching and learning issues. They provide advice to the Executive Dean on all matters related to the Teaching and Learning program of the Faculty, including regarding mechanisms for the distribution of the Faculty teaching budget.

The Associate Dean (Academic) exercises authority in relation to rules on issues such as admissions, granting credit, approval of overseas study, special and supplementary examinations, exclusions, appeals and graduations and acts as the Faculty's Integrity Officer. On a Faculty wide basis, the Associate Dean (Academic) takes responsibility for student counseling, academic advising and pastoral care of students, and the associated staff training for these activities.

The Associate Dean (Academic) has responsibility for leading a student-centred culture among academic staff focused on the benefits of the UQ Advantage and the UQ BEL Advantage and for developing strategies, including e-Learning strategies and tools, to enhance the quality of the BEL student experience. The Associate Dean (Academic) develops and support strategies to attract external funding for teaching innovation and scholarship, and mechanisms to promote staff development in the area of Teaching and Learning, including identifying and supporting staff who are prospective candidates for Teaching and Learning Excellence Awards.
