Australia Day honours for BEL community

UQ Business School's Professor Mark Dodgson was awarded an AO.

Australia Day 2019 Honours have been conferred on 16 prominent alumni, staff and friends of The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL).

The annual awards recognise Australian citizens who have achieved excellence and enriched the community across professional, public and service sectors.

BEL Faculty Executive Dean Professor Andrew Griffiths said the 2019 honourees deserved their moment in the spotlight.

“These BEL community members have served their country admirably for many years, making significant contributions to fields as diverse as business innovation research, law, education and mining,” Professor Griffiths said.

“I applaud our 2019 honourees, and I look forward to seeing what they do next.”

Other notable UQ recipients included UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj, who was named a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent service to higher education and research.

Congratulations to the 2019 BEL honourees:


Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Mr Malcolm Broomhead AO, Chair of Orica, Director of BHP Billiton, and benefactor of UQ Business School’s Malcolm Broomhead Chair in Finance | Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (1975), Master of Business Administration (1984)

For distinguished service to business and mining, and through financial support for education and medical research.

Professor Mark Dodgson AO, Professor of Innovation Studies at UQ Business School

For distinguished service to education in the field of business innovation strategy, as a researcher, advisor and author.

Professor Sandra Harding AO, Vice-Chancellor and President of James Cook University | Master of Public Administration (1990)

For distinguished service to education at the national and international level, and to the community of Queensland.


Officer (AO) in the Military Division of the Order of Australia

Major General Stephen Porter AO, Commander 2nd Division, Australian Army | Master of Business Administration (2001)

For distinguished service to the Australian Army and transformation of the Army Reserve through his significant contributions as the Commander 2nd Division.


Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Mr Gary Crooke QC AM, former Integrity Commissioner of Queensland and former Chair of the National Crime Authority | Bachelor of Arts (1964), Bachelor of Laws (1966)

For significant service to the law, to anti-crime and corruption authorities, and to legal standards.

Mr Robert Finch AM, former Vice-President of the World Squash Federation | Bachelor of Economics (1976)

For significant service to squash through a range of administrative roles, and as a player.

Ms Susan Forrester AM, Chair of National Veterinary Care and former Director of UnitingCare Queensland | Bachelor of Arts (1987), Bachelor of Laws (1990)

For significant service to business through governance and strategic roles, and as an advocate for women.

Dr Peter McCawley AM, Senior Academic at the College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, and former Dean of the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo | Bachelor of Economics (1968)

For significant service to the Asia-Pacific region through economic advisory roles.

Mr Thomas McGuire AM, Director and Co-owner of McGuires Hotel Group and President of the Australian Hotels Association Queensland | Bachelor of Laws (1975)

For significant service to the tourism and hospitality industry, and to the community.

Ms Bronwyn Morris AM, President of the Queensland Council – Australian Institute of Company Directors, President of the RACQ, and Director of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation | Bachelor of Commerce (1976)

For significant service to business through leadership and advisory roles.


Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Mr John Ive OAM, Grazier and land manager of Talaheni | Bachelor of Economics (1974)

For service to the superfine wool growing industry.

Mr Christos Kazonis OAM, Chair of the Paniyiri Greek Festival | Associate Diploma in Real Estate Valuation (1987)

For service to the Greek community of Brisbane.

Mr Paul Laxon OAM, Queensland Managing Partner and Oceania Tax Leader for Energy at Ernst & Young and Chair of Hear and Say | Bachelor of Commerce (1985)

For service to the business sector, and to the community.

Mr Antony Love OAM, Chair of the Aegium Foundation | Bachelor of Commerce (1972), Associate in Accountancy (1972)

For service to the community.

Ms Helen Matthews OAM, Lecturer and Course Coordinator from 2004-2008 at the TC Beirne School of Law, Principal Lawyer at Women’s Legal Service Victoria

For service to the law.

Ms Andrea Staines OAM FAICD , Non-executive director of several organisations and agencies including Tourism Australia, UnitingCare Queensland and the National Disability Insurance Agency | Bachelor of Economics (1986)

For service to business, and as a role model for women.
