Supporting learning

At UQ, our aim is to help you learn to see the potential of the world, and gain the knowledge to make it better.

In BEL, we provide you with a world-class education with learning designed to push your boundaries. Add into this mix award-winning teachers who are dedicated to help you succeed in your studies, and a diverse range of services dedicated to support your learning and help you reach your potential, it is no wonder that so many BEL graduates have successfully turned their qualifications into dynamic and interesting careers.

Here’s how we support your learning …

Learning support staff and activities

From the moment you enrol in a BEL program, you gain a team of dedicated professional and academic staff who want to help you succeed in your studies and transition into a career of your choice. This support is ongoing – from orientation to post-graduation - with numerous opportunities provided within and beyond your courses.

BEL Student Centre

The BEL Faculty has a team of dedicated people who can provide you with expert information and resources on a wide range of matters relating to your program, in person and virtually.

Our BEL Student Centre is located on Level 2, Colin Clark Building (39), St Lucia campus.

Learning hub

Want to get the most of your studies, tackle assignments and prepare well for exams? Whether you’re enrolled in your first semester of study or last, UQ Student Services provides a ‘hub’ of free learning resources to help you achieve academic success. These range from 1 hour learning workshops and online learning guides, to an appointment with a Learning Advisor.

Course teaching staff

Your teachers - Course Coordinators, Lecturers and Tutors – are on hand to support your learning, so please be proactive and ask for assistance when needed. Your ECPs (Electronic Course Profiles) list the names and contact details of all the staff members involved in teaching your courses each semester.

Dynamic learning experiences

Our graduates aspire to and enjoy careers in diverse fields and organisations across the globe. In BEL, we provide a range of dynamic learning experiences to help students achieve their goals.

BEL Careers and Employability

BEL Careers and Employability provide opportunities for students to connect with industry, gain discipline-relevant work experience and develop their confidence, profile and career plans.

Student-Staff Partnerships

UQ Student-Staff Partnerships provide a valuable opportunity for staff and students to co-design courses, tutorial or assessment activities, co-facilitate events, or co-develop engagement initiatives. In BEL, we welcome your involvement in designing, delivering and enhancing the student experience.

Our academics

Our academic staff are leaders in their fields, working to find solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. Their research and consultancy activities inform their teaching, providing you with practical experiences to ‘push boundaries’ and build on your knowledge through applied projects, real-life case studies and problems, guest lecturers from industry, and opportunities for placements, study tours and internships. In doing so, BEL academics support you to establish links with industry, and gain the expertise needed to add value to organisations as game changing graduates.

Post-graduation Support: Global Alumni Network

Our support for your learning extends beyond graduation. As a BEL Alumni, you will have access to a range of dynamic and informative events and networking experiences via The Global Connection, Alumni Lecture Series, BEL Alumni Receptions and benefit dinners. Our alumni network is a vibrant and supportive community of more than 68,000 UQ BEL graduates spread across the globe who are keen to stay connected and support current students during their program.

Learning through assessment

The University is committed to the provision of high quality, innovative and engaging assessment practices. In BEL, we want to engage our students in productive learning; in doing so, our course teachers will help you demonstrate learnings through appropriate assessment tasks, and provide you with effective and ongoing feedback to support your learning.

During your studies, you will complete assessment tasks that have relevance to industry. Because these tasks are designed to provide real-life, authentic learning experiences, you can capture and track your experiences via an ePortfolio, and then use this portfolio as evidence of your knowledge, skills and attributes.

Flexible learning

Providing personalised and flexible learning is one way we are transforming the student experience. In BEL, our courses are evolving to integrate (blend) both on-campus and online activities that will maximise student learning outcomes. The online learning components give you the flexibility to learn at your own pace and in ways to suit your personal circumstances, while the on-campus learning focuses on maximising face-to-face collaborative learning that is engaging and practical.

As part of your studies, you may be asked to complete a massive open online course, known as a MOOC. These provide flexible learning opportunities as many of these MOOCs are self-paced, free to access via UQx, and cover a wide variety of topics.
