Tony Guan

After graduating from UQ, Tony completed an MBA and got experience working in different financial sectors. He now works in cross-border mergers and acquisitions for a company listed in China. His areas of specialty include cross-border mergers and acquisitions, financial modelling, business consulting and stakeholder relationships.

Tony’s career highlight is investing in and setting up one of the biggest dairy projects in North East China and eventually listing it on the Chinese National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ). Other highlights include investing in and setting up the Ke Hong Eye Surgery Hospital in Central China and consulting a Chinese state-owned enterprise as it expanded into Australia and New Zealand.

Tony’s advice to new graduates is to ‘never give up, work harder and enjoy every single day’. He fondly remembers the CityCat from his time at UQ and how it would take students everywhere along the river. His hobbies include golf, swimming and travelling.

Vanessa Gu

Ms Vanessa Gu is currently the Assistant Vice President Portfolio Sales, HSBC Payment and Cash Management at HSBC China.

Vanessa graduated from The University of Queensland in 2007 with a Masters of Commerce. She fondly remembers relaxing on the grass of the Great Court between lectures and studying, socialising and sharing views of work, life and personal values with her classmates. Many hours were also spent in the library preparing for exams.

Some of Vanessa’s interests include travelling and reading, which has enriched her life and broadened her view of the world. She also enjoys jogging and recently took up golf to improve her work-life balance and expand her social network.

Xin Hu

Xin Hu Communication Planning Manager, PHD Worldwide

Xin is currently Communications Planning Manager at PHD Worldwide. She has four years of marketing and media planning experience in a 4A’s advertising agency serving global clients including: Unilever, Porsche, DS, Bacardi and Bayer. Her areas of speciality are business communication strategy and consumer insight, especially in the FMCG industry and her career highlight was helping PHD to win the global account of Bayer and eBay and winning local and international awards including Festival of Media, Mumbrella and AME.

Her advice to new graduates is to ‘immerse yourself with the work, try to work with different people, everyone has different skill set, try to find your own shining points, always lean in, always step up, always believe in yourself. Been proactive is the most important one skill at the beginning stage of career.’ Xin’s hobbies and interests include photography, travel, cooking, yoga and flower arrangement and her favourite UQ professor was Lance Newey and his entrepreneurship class.
